Today is Chicago River Day, which volunteers gather to clean up the Chicago River.   Friends of the Chicago River  founded this tradition in 1992 with only 25 volunteers, today 4000 volunteers are expected to participate at 70 sites along the river.  Volunteers of all ages work side-by-side to collect garbage and sort for recycling, remove invasive vegetation, spruce up river-edge trails, plant native seedlings, and much more. The cleanup starts at 9 am to 12 pm.  For more information check out Friend of Chicago River site.
