Today the Sears Tower has officially been renamed as the Willis Tower. This news may be a shock for many since the “Sears Tower” is one of the most iconic skyscrapers in the world and a huge part of Chicago and American culture. Sears Roebuck & Co., the original tenant occupied the building from 1973 to 1992. The British insurance company, Willis Group Holdings is now the largest tenant and secured naming rights as part of the lease agreement. Even though, the Willis Group plans to bring hundreds of jobs to Chicago, several Chicagoans are refusing to acknowledge the change and say they will continue to refer to the tower as the “Sears Tower.” Willis Group Holdings chief executive Joe Plumeri said, “If we’re good corporate citizens and do what we should, hopefully Willis and the tower and Chicago will all become synonymous.” We will have to wait and see what affect the Willis Tower will have on the Sears Tower legacy.
