Whether you’re a tourist or local, taking photos of Chicago’s architectural beauties is a must. Learning how to snap the best shot can improve the quality of your photo.  Unfortunately, it is very easy to not capture the scope and all the details of a building.  No matter if your using a camera phone or the latest DSLR camera, here’s a list of tips that can enhance your photos.

On the boat tour you can always use any camera or phone, but to capture ornamental details from a building use a wide-angle lens.  Also, select auto-focus and panoramic options on your device.

Wide lens are great for neo gothic and classical buildings like the Chicago Tribune Tower

Stabilizing your camera can be a challenge on the boat tour.  Bring a stable camera or activate the stabilization function on your camera or phone. If you’re using  a tripod, turn off the stabilization function.

Get the best lighting for your photo by controlling the aperture, ISO, and shutter speed.

  • Aperture will allow you to manage the depth of field.
  • Use a low ISO setting during the tour to minimize the noise.
  • Go with a slower shutter speed, you will have plenty of time to snap away.

In the era of Instagram, everyone is applying filters to their photos to effortlessly change the look of them.  Filters can allow you to change the colors, exposures, and contrast with just a tap.

Filters can add soft or dramatic effects

Taking great photos of architecture should be shared with family, friends, and even strangers on social photo-sharing sites like Flickr, Instagram, & EyeEm.
